The lyrics of this piece begin with the word “butterfly” in three languages- mariposa, farfalla, and papillon. However, the words appear randomly fragmented into meaningless groups of syllables which gradually coalesce to form the phrase “I am butterfly” in the three languages. This section represents emergence from the cacoon, or birth.
Then come the latin words for birth, flight and death, expressing the beautiful brevity of life.
The final section returns to “I am butterfly” stated with defiant but fading strength until they become silent, representing the end of life’s cycle.
